Based in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia, SCANR is composed of 11 hospitals: MedStar Washington Hospital Center, MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, Children’s National Medical Center, George Washington University Hospital, University of Maryland, University of Virginia, INOVA Fairfax, Fralin Biomedical, Carilion Clinic, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Howard University Hospital. The NINDS Intramural Stroke Program is also affiliated.

SCANR sites evaluated over 2100 acute stroke patients in 2012.  We offer Trial Network expertise in the following: acute multimodal MRI, neurorehab, pediatric stroke, and disparities. Of particular significance is our experience with recruiting urban underserved stroke patients into studies. SCANR’s scientific base includes two Carnegie Research 1 Universities and two CTSA programs. Our preclinical expertise includes multimodal imaging, biomarkers, brain stimulation, robotics, neurorehabilitation trials, adaptive trial design, and disparities research.

SCANR will provide outstanding research training and mentorship for stroke clinician fellows, preparing them for productive stroke research careers.  There are currently 5 fellowship programs and two adult neurology residencies among SCANR-affiliated institutions. This training joins strong multidisciplinary clinical and research expertise in stroke with extensive experience in research training and career development of clinician scientists.
